Clinical Study Oversight and Regulation in Canada
Clinical studies in Ontario and across Canada follow strict rules to protect participants. Independent boards and regulatory bodies review studies, as applicable, before they begin to help protect your rights, safety and well-being.
Some key organisations and systems include:
- Research Ethics Boards (REBs)
Independent boards that review a study's potential risks and benefits, consent process and privacy protections, and provide ongoing ethics oversight.
- Stream
Clinical Trials Ontario (CTO)'s streamlined ethics review program supports a single ethics review across participating institutions in Ontario, helping studies open sooner while maintaining strong protections for participants.
- CanReview
Supports a single ethics review for clinical trials taking place at multiple participating sites across Canada, helping make it easier to activate a clinical trial at additional sites in other provinces and territories while maintaining strong protections for participants.
- Health Canada
Provides regulatory oversight for clinical trials involving drugs, medical devices and other health products, as applicable.

If you choose to take part in a clinical study, you have the right to:
- Make an informed decision before participating
- Ask questions and take time to decide
- Choose not to participate, or leave a study at any time
- Have your privacy and personal information protected
These protections are in place for all clinical studies conducted in Canada.
